BEIJING, May 12 — A powerful earthquake hit central China on Monday, killing at least 8,500 and injuring 10,000 others as schools and other buildings collapsed throughout Sichuan province.
The New China News Agency said local disaster relief officials estimated as many as 3,000 had died in Beichuan, near the quake’s epicenter, and that perhaps 80 percent of the buildings in that jurisdiction had collapsed.
